Book: Civilization and its discontents

Author: Sigmund Freud

Civilization is obeying the laws of economic necessity, since a large amount of the psychical energy has to be withdrawn from sexuality.

Takeaway: Civilization can be considered a trade-off in which humans gave away a part of their freedom (especially in the sexual sphere) to meet social and economic standards... but this seems not to be working out.
